OLD LYME, Conn., April 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Kellogg Marine,
a leading marine wholesale distributor, announced today that it has
received a plaque of appreciation from the Glacier Society, a
not-for-profit foundation dedicated to the restoration and
operation of the USS/USCGC Glacier and the Arctic Scout, a 39-foot
Arctic Survey Boat (ASB) carried aboard the Glacier. Glacier, while
in service with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard, logged a
record-breaking 39 missions to the Arctic and Antarctica. The
Society's overall mission with Glacier is to provide assistance to
the indigenous peoples in the Arctic Basin by delivering needed
medical care to remote coastal areas. The Glacier Society also
supports polar medical and environmental research, and conducts
educational programs. The Kellogg Marine team generated product
donations worth over $25,000 from more than 15 marine manufacturers
including Blue Seas, Bellingham, Wash.; Hubbell, Inc., Bridgeport,
Conn.; and Midstate Battery Co., Bloomfield, Conn. -- just to name
a few. "We were very impressed not only by the total value of the
donations Kellogg Marine was able to raise, but also by their
ability to bring onboard so many marine manufacturers," said Donald
C. Epperson of the Glacier Society. "We certainly appreciate the
support." The products will be used in the restoration of the
Arctic Scout. Among other functions, the vessel will serve as a
platform for the Glacier Society's Youth Maritime Training Program,
which provides young people ages 12 through 18, hands-on training
in seamanship; boat construction; vessel and engine maintenance;
marine sciences; leadership skills and teamwork. "We were happy to
roll up our sleeves and show support for this useful, well-crafted
program," said Robert E. Staehle, general manager at Kellogg
Marine. "We strongly believe that the skills acquired during this
program will make participants better boaters and better citizens."
The Brewer Organization, which owns Brewer's Pilots Point Marina in
Westbrook, Conn., and Kellogg Marine joined forces to help this
project succeed. Arctic Scout is now in the final stages of the
refurbishment conducted by the professional staff at Brewer's
Pilots Point Marina. The work is supported by contributions of
equipment and service by the Glacier Society's commercial sponsors.
To improve reliability and enhance the learning environment,
plumbing, wiring, lighting, fuel lines, fire controls, and
environmental systems will be replaced. Up-to-date electronic
navigation, communication, and safety equipment also will be
installed. Launching is targeted for this summer. For more
