Union Pacific Is Again Named the Most Military-Friendly Employer in
America OMAHA, Neb., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- For the
second year in a row, G.I. Jobs magazine has named Union Pacific
Railroad the nation's top Military-Friendly Employer. The magazine
commended Union Pacific's resource-laden effort and
high-performance results in recruiting transitioning military
personnel. According to G.I. Jobs, "Union Pacific's No. 1 ranking
is based on the resources and assets it has dedicated exclusively
to recruiting members of the military." "Military operations are
based upon defining a mission, developing a plan, moving troops and
equipment, and executing the plan with vigor through superior
leadership skills," said Rick McCormack, G.I. Jobs publisher.
"These are also basic components of a successful business plan,
which Union Pacific has incorporated into its military hiring
programs." This is the fourth year G.I. Jobs has issued its list of
the Top Military-Friendly Companies. The list is drawn from a
sample of Fortune 500 companies and based on criteria that include
the strength of company military recruiting efforts, the percentage
of new hires with prior military service and company policies
toward National Guard and reserve service. "We are in the middle of
an unprecedented hiring effort in every state in which we operate,
and we are very honored G.I. Jobs has again recognized our efforts
to recruit members of the military," said Barb Schaefer, senior
vice president-Human Resources. "As we have through much of our
history, we actively recruit and hire former military people
because their skills and lifestyles are a great fit for our
railroad -- and because they make excellent employees." Union
Pacific targets military personnel for several reasons. Many of the
railroad's technical jobs -- such as diesel locomotive mechanics
and electricians, and railcar mechanics -- are well-suited for
military members who have developed similar skills working with
Armed Forces large equipment. Lifestyles and working conditions
also are similar between the military and the railroad. Many
positions at Union Pacific involve outdoor work with
non-traditional working hours. Military personnel tend to be
flexible when it comes to relocation, which can be helpful in
gaining familiarity with Union Pacific's 32,000 mile network, and
in potentially advancing their careers at the railroad. Union
Pacific job recruiters actively seek military personnel by
attending military job fairs and transitional assistance programs,
and regularly visiting major military installations. The railroad
recently boosted its recruiting efforts through a partnership with
the United States Army's Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS)
program. PaYS is an Army recruiting initiative that encourages
American industry to fill positions with highly qualified
applicants who have completed their service. The program benefits
the Army through its appeal to young people interested in obtaining
a quality civilian job after leaving the Army. Union Pacific's
recognition in G.I. Jobs is the railroad's third workplace honor
this year. Working Mother magazine named North America's largest
railroad as one of the nation's 100 Best Companies for Working
Mothers, and LATINA Style magazine named Union Pacific one of its
LATINA Style 50 companies that provide sensitivity to professional
Hispanic women's needs and goals in the workplace. Jobs at Union
