SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Twitter Inc. rallied Thursday to lead the tech sector higher, as shares of Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. also posted gains.

Twitter (TWTR) jumped 4.8% to close at $73.31 after volatile trades early in the session. The social network's stock was up 22% for the week.

Shares of Facebook Inc. (FB) retreated by 0.4% to close at $57.73, while LinkedIn Corp. (LNKD) eked out a 0.1% gain to close at $220.50.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) rose 1% to close at $37.44, one of the best performers on the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI), which climbed 122.33 points. H-P (HPQ) climbed 0.5% to close at $28.31.

On the downside, shares of Apple Inc. (AAPL) shed 0.7% to close at $563.90, while Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) was off 0.5% to close at $40.65.

But the tech sector managed to stay positive as the Nasdaq Composite Index (RIXF) edged higher by 0.3% to close at 4,167.

The Morgan Stanley High Tech 35 Index (MSH) and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) were each up a fraction.
