Boosted by growing energy sales, Brazil's Tractebel Energia SA (TBLEY, TBLE3.BR) posted first-quarter net profit of 248.7 million Brazilian reals ($140 million), up from BRL233.9 million in the same period last year.

The utility's first-quarter revenue was BRL945.5 million, up 10% from the first quarter of 2009.

Tractebel's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were BRL573.2 million, up 22% from the first quarter of 2009. The company's Ebitda margin, a key measure of profitability, rose to 60.6% from 54.6% in the first quarter of 2009.

The company's net debt ended the first quarter at BRL2.38 billion, down from BRL2.8 billion in the year earlier period.

Tractebel is a local subsidiary of Franco-Belgian company Suez (SZE.FR).
