Google's email service is introducing new requirements for bulk senders as part of an effort focused on safety and spam prevention.

Gmail's new requirements affect bulk senders who send more than 5,000 messages to Gmail addresses in one day, Alphabet-unit Google said in a blog post. It will require such senders to strongly authenticate their emails based on best practices, which it says will close loopholes exploited by bad actors.

Other requirements include enabling an option to unsubscribe from commercial emails with one click and that the request be processed within two days, as well as the service enforcing a clear spam rate threshold that senders must stay under to ensure that recipients aren't bombarded with unwanted messages.

The requirements will begin in February.

"These changes are like a tune-up for the email world, and by fixing a few things under the hood, we can keep email running smoothly," the company said.
