Marconi Provides Mission-Critical Network for Heathrow Airport's
Terminal 5 People Mover Project Bombardier relies on Marconi's
proven communications networks and installation services for
expansion at one of world's busiest airports PITTSBURGH, May 31
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Marconi Corporation plc (LONDON: MONI and
Nasdaq: MRCIY) today announced that Bombardier Transportation will
use Marconi's data networking equipment and services to handle
mission critical train control data for Automated People Mover
(APM) at BAA Heathrow's Terminal 5 project. Construction of
Heathrow T5 will expand capacity at Heathrow, already one of the
world's busiest airports, to accommodate another 30 million
passengers a year. Bombardier and Marconi are also partnered to
deliver a similar, comprehensive train-control data network for the
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in 2005. At Heathrow,
Marconi will provide Bombardier with a scalable, digital network
for command and control of the APM -- a driverless train for
transferring passengers between the main terminal and outlying
buildings using a dedicated underground track. Marconi's services
include a fully integrated turnkey communications system, combining
a mission- critical, multiservice network with installation and
training. "Marconi's expertise in designing, building and servicing
mission-critical communications networks is proven in the most
demanding environments around the world, including national defense
and emergencies, transportation command and control, and security
and surveillance applications," said Geoff Doy, CEO of Marconi's
Data Networks division that is supplying the network and ongoing
services. "Key features of Marconi's communications networks are
flexibility and ease of expansion, which improve long-term
investment returns and make them well-suited for the new
packet-based applications of next-generation networks." About the
T5 Project T5 will add passenger handling capacity of between 30
million and 35 million passengers a year at Heathrow. Phase 1 of
the project, which includes the main terminal building and one
satellite building is due for completion in March 2008. Phase 2,
which includes the second satellite building, is scheduled for
completion in 2011. About Marconi Corporation plc Marconi
