WV Drivers can now ‘Skip the Trip’ when renewing their driver’s license

The latest digital service from the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles stands to create a substantial convenience for citizens. For the first time, West Virginia drivers and State ID holders have the option to renew online at www.dmv.wv.gov. The new process takes only a few minutes and a new license arrives in the mail within 10-14 business days.

Online renewal is available for non-commercial drivers over 21 years of age. Additionally, applicants must be US citizens with licenses in good standing with the DMV. To ensure the process is secure, no changes can be made to name, address, or certain driver information when renewing online. Drivers will need their current/expired license, the renewal notice mailed by the DMV, and major credit or debit card to complete the online renewal process.

The new service enables citizens to quickly and easily renew their licenses or order a duplicate online. Features include:

  • A purely digital process - no additional documentation required
  • Q&A for an easy-to-follow, interview-style process
  • Mobile-friendly design
  • Efficient delivery – new licenses are received in the mail

Citizens can renew 24/7 and securely pay with Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express. Drivers will have the option to renew online every other renewal cycle. Alternating renewals must be completed at a regional office and include an updated vision exam and photo.

“I’m very excited to offer this new, convenient renewal option to West Virginia citizens,” said Commissioner Pat Reed. “We’ve worked hard to make it easier for citizens to interact with the DMV. The new online driver’s license renewal service joins our other customer-focused initiatives to help realize that goal.”

In addition to online, the DMV plans to feature driver’s license renewals on new self-service terminals by the end of the year.
