Advanced Digital Information Corporation (Nasdaq:ADIC), the leader
in Intelligent Storage(TM) solutions for the open systems market,
announced today upgrades to its StorNext data management software
that solidifies its position as the industry's leading software for
managing digital assets in high-performance workflow and multi-tier
archive settings. New features in the StorNext 2.7 release will
make it easier for users to create larger, more active, and more
diversified managed storage environments. The expanded
functionality means that users can manage more files, access them
more quickly, and integrate more kinds of storage resources into
their archives and workflow operations to help them finish projects
faster and reduce overall storage costs. The new release enhances
the flexibility of StorNext's intelligent archiving capabilities by
adding support for external disk-based appliances to ADIC's
iMover(TM) technology. iMover is the core technology that gives
StorNext the ability to move data across multiple storage tiers --
both disk and tape -- while maintaining transparent access to the
files for multiple hosts and operating systems. In the new release,
StorNext archives can now integrate specialized disk storage
resources, including NAS filers, any NFS appliance, and UNIX file
systems. These disk elements can be used in conjunction with tape
or can be used to create disk-only archive environments. "Archives
need to do more because digital asset pools are getting bigger and
asset reuse is more complex," said Paul Zuhorski, Executive
Director, ADIC Advanced Solutions Group. "ADIC has responded by
letting customers add specialized disk appliances to their
multi-tier archives. StorNext archives still offer long-term
retention and very high value -- now they also provide more
flexibility and faster file access. "It's also important to note
that the StorNext architecture is powerful enough to leverage the
patented data de-duplication technology in Blocklets(TM) software
being developed by Rocksoft Ltd., which ADIC recently announced an
agreement to acquire. In the future, we expect Blocklets to let us
offer our customers the most efficient disk-based data stores
possible." Along with the expanded storage resource support, the
new StorNext release expands the software's ability to create
large-scale, active asset pools. It increases the maximum size of
storage LUNs to 2 TB, more than triples the number of total files
that can be stored to 100 million, expands support for 64-bit
platforms, and increases system recovery speed -- all features that
make it easier for users to handle larger file pools, store more
data, and access it more quickly across multiple storage tiers.
Also in the 2.7 release is an extension of ADIC's iLayer active
monitoring and intelligent diagnostics -- including enhanced log
capture, RAS ticket tracking, and email alerting -- to StorNext
environments. "High-performance applications -- rich media,
broadcasting, imaging, data analysis -- need both speed and scale
to get full value from digital assets," said Mr. Zuhorski.
"StorNext 2.7 helps them ingest data faster, store more files, and
access their assets more easily. It also lets them leverage
multiple media types, platforms, and operating systems so they can
control costs and preserve their independence." Also included in
the StorNext 2.7 release is automated conversion for data stored in
ADIC's earlier-generation AMASS archive software to the StorNext
environment, and support for LDAP technologies like Microsoft's
Active Directory which simplify user management. New operating
environment support includes updates for Solaris 10, RedHat Linux 3
and 4, and SUSE Linux 9 -- coverage for those platforms includes
Opteron/EM64T, Intel 32-bit, AMD 32, and Itanium platforms. New
tape library support was added for ADIC Scalar i500, Quantum PX720,
and the LTO-3 version of the HP ESL712e library. About StorNext
