Airbus is partnering with Northrop Grumman in its bid for a U.K. program aimed at developing a new constellation of military communications satellites for the country's armed forces.

The two companies said in a joint statement on Monday that they had signed a memorandum of understanding to develop the latest military satellite communication technologies and address the changing needs of the U.K. armed forces as space gets busier and more competitive.

A spokesperson for Airbus's defense and space business said the European plane maker would lead the bid, with Northrop Grumman as its partner.

Airbus's involvement in the U.K.'s SKYNET program dates back to 1974. The company secured a contract in July 2020 to supplement a fleet of satellites.
