General Motors Corp. (GMGMQ) plans to idle its plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, for seven weeks this summer to adjust for weak demand in the Mexican and international markets, the company's Mexican unit said Tuesday.

The plant, which produces the compact Chevrolet Aveo and Pontiac G3, will be idled from July 1 to August 21, General Motors de Mexico said in a press release.

A two-week summer idling period is normal, GM noted.

The company plans to use three to four weeks of the suspension for employee training, and it will pay workers their full salary during those weeks, a GM spokeswoman said. Employees will take about three of the weeks off, and the company will distribute the associated pay cut over the rest of the year.

The spokeswoman said GM's three other Mexican auto plants - in the cities of Toluca, Ramos Arizpe and Silao - will continue to operate as usual.
