Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has partnered with an Italian engineering firm to increase ventilator production, as the coronavirus pandemic spreads and demand for medical equipment increases, the company said Friday.

FCA is using its manufacturing plant in Centro, Italy, to assist Siare Engineering International Group in producing electrovalves and reducing ventilator production time by 30% to 50%, the company said in a statement.

FCA's Centro plant is generally used to manufacture high-performance engines, but production for auto parts has been suspended since March 16.

"The engineering team... has worked rapidly to produce the first group of electrovalves, which are the beating 'heart' of the ventilators urgently needed by hospitals in Italy and other countries," the Italian-American company said.
