HelloFresh SE said Monday that it is working closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and one of its suppliers after a public health alert was issued on concerns that ground-beef products in its meal kits may be contaminated with Escherichia coli.

"The notification by the USDA affects a very small portion of HelloFresh customers in the U.S. who received ground beef from one specific supplier," the German company said. "The USDA issued a public health alert out of an abundance of caution."

On Saturday, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued an alert over meal kits shipped to consumers from July 2 to July 21. A recall wasn't requested as the products are no longer available for purchase.

The alert comes as some public health authorities in the country are investigating an outbreak of E. coli, with ground beef being the probable source of the illnesses.
