EDP-Energias de Portugal SA said Tuesday that its installed
capacity at the end of June was lower than the previous year, and
that electricity generation fell in the first half of the year.
The Portuguese energy company said it had an installed capacity
of 23.9 gigawatts at the end of June--79% of which from renewable
sources--compared with 26.75 GW one year ago. The decrease is
mainly attributable to the disposal of plants in Spain and
Portugal, as well as the shutdown of the Sines coal plant in
Portugal, it said.
Electricity generated in the first half fell to 29.9 terawatt
hours from 31.99 TWh the previous year. In the second quarter of
the year, the company generated 13.37 TWh.
EDP said total electricity distributed in the first half rose
16% on year in the Iberian peninsula and 10% in Brazil as a result
of economic recovery.
