John M. Bourque, Founder and CEO of Bourque Industries, has
launched his non-profit Kryron Foundation, which will provide fine
arts funding for underprivileged Tucson youth, with a gift to
Andres Gallegos, a very special young musician who spends much of
his life caring for his blind mother who has multiple sclerosis.
Gallegos was given a professional drum set to replace the badly
worn instruments he had been playing for several years.
The 16 year-old drummer's life was recently transformed when his
stepfather, who had been married to his mother for 11 years, was
deported six months ago. Since then, Andres and his younger sister
have been left with the primary responsibility of caring for their
mother, who needs assistance bathing, clothing, and washing herself
on a daily basis.
Bourque's cousin, Mike McCafferey, a professional musician who
has managed and played with several major national musical acts,
was on hand to deliver the drumset to Gallegos at his home near La
Cholla High School.
“It's hard to imagine a more deserving young person than
Andres,” said John M. Bourque, Founder of the Kryron Foundation and
Bourque Industries. “The dedication that he shows to his family and
to his music is an inspiration. Andres has had a lot of things go
against him, it's incredibly rewarding to be a part of something
positive in his life.”
Andres comes from a musical family. His uncle played drums with
Richie Valens, but quit the band partially because of his mother's
concerns about the safety of aviation in the early days of air
travel. Valens was later killed in a plane crash in Iowa with other
musicians.
Andres believes this gift will help him pursue his dream of
playing music professionally. “Every member of my band is very
committed. We've been writing songs and we rehearse all the time,”
said Gallegos.
For Bourque, it's more about giving Gallegos a positive outlet
and a way to stay off the streets.
“So many kids end up on the streets joining gangs because they
don't have something that they love to keep them occupied and doing
the right things,” said Bourque. “Andres is a good kid with a
bright future and helping him with his music will help him be a
better student and a more productive adult, no matter what career
he ends up choosing.”
