Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc.'s (FCX) said that its copper operations in Chile weren't affected by a series of strong aftershocks in the country Thursday.

Three strong earthquakes--including one of magnitude-7.2--rocked Chile's central-south earlier Thursday minutes before Sebastian Pinera was sworn in as the country's president.

They are likely aftershocks from the previous 8.8-magnitude quake that devastated large parts of Chile's Maule and Bio Bio regions at the end of February.

"There was no impact to our mining operations or Santiago offices," Freeport spokesman William Collier said.

Production temporarily was halted at Freeport's operations following the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the country at the end of February.

However, operations resumed the next day at its Minera Candelaria and Ojos del Salado operations, which produced 168,000 metric tons of copper last year.
