Putting citizens at the center of government is increasingly
impacting all levels of government. A growing number of Colorado
counties are responding to the demand by expanding online
information. Sedgwick County in Colorado’s northeastern corner is
the latest. “Our office is one of the first offices people call
when they need information,” says County Assessor, Juby Cumming.
“We know that we need to meet the goals of providing more
information and being more forthcoming about what’s going on
through our website.”
Being integrated into Colorado.gov, the state’s official website
and portal for local government websites, makes it simple for
Sedgwick County to achieve its goals. “We have the autonomy to add
content ourselves instead of relying on someone else,” says Juby.
‘We have already added department pages for Landfill, the County
Attorney, our Commissioners, the Sheriff’s weekly service call, and
we’re ramping up for key events like the County Fair.”
By incorporating the Colorado Department of Revenue’s myDMV into
its website, the County is also meeting another citizen
expectation—less time in line by handling more services online.
Citizens can renew drivers’ licenses, identification cards and
motor vehicle registrations through one, easy-to-use source. In
addition, they can perform these tasks from the convenience of
their cell phones, tablets, or computers. The County’s website also
makes it simple to change addresses as well as stay up-to-date on
road and bridge projects, Code RED weather warnings, and public
meetings.
To guide its online expansion, Sedgwick County turned to
Colorado Interactive (CI) and the Statewide Internet Portal
Authority (SIPA). CI provides digital government services to state
agencies and local governments through a contract with SIPA—the
official internet portal connecting the public with Colorado
governments. The partnership’s mission allows government leaders to
focus on delivering in-demand, digital government solutions without
requests for proposals or the use of tax appropriations. The
CI/SIPA partnership has benefitted over 30 counties across
Colorado.
”Citizens are setting the standard for information they expect
to see and things they expect to do online to make their lives
easier,” says CI’s President and General Manager, Fred Sargeson.
“Sedgwick County’s website is a great example of government
listening and responding to its citizens.” Counties in need of free
website hosting and development using the Colorado.gov website
platform, should submit requests through SIPA.
