Texas NICUSA leading the way with innovative
implementation of forward-thinking software development
methodologies
Texas NICUSA, the private partner that operates Texas.gov
(www.texas.gov) on behalf of the state, is pioneering efforts among
eGovernment integrators by implementing DevOps and Agile software
development methodologies into its day-to-day operations. In a
recent release of an O’Reilly Media, Inc. eBook titled “DevOps in
Practice,” author J. Paul Reed highlights Texas.gov in a case study
to better understand how companies in different industries are
applying the DevOps methodology within their own organizational
cultures. Reed recently interviewed two Texas NICUSA staff members
who are the leading forces behind the integration to learn more
about how this innovative approach has unfolded for the Texas.gov
program.
“DevOps and Agile are innovative practices that deliver results
across the full spectrum of software development and technical
operations,” said Pete Eichorn, Texas.gov Director of Technology.
“Using these practices has enabled us to produce better, more
secure online services in less time.”
Tim Virtue, Texas.gov Chief Information Security Officer, has
embraced the approach within the context of security by embedding
his team members within each Agile team at Texas NICUSA. Virtue has
also organized his team into its own functioning Agile unit.
“Providing secure online government services to the citizens of
Texas and the government agencies we work with are our paramount
concerns. This arrangement helps us proactively address security in
a strategic, holistic way,” he said.
With more than 1,000 online services currently available and new
applications being web-enabled all the time, these methods have
helped Texas NICUSA streamline the software development
process.
