Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV on Wednesday said that it might temporarily close plants in Italy and reduce daily production rates in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The Italian-American auto maker will sanitize all work and rest areas, and washrooms, it said.

"To enable greater spacing of employees at their workstations, daily production rates will be lowered to accommodate the adapted manufacturing processes," the company said in a statement.

As the virus spread throughout February, Fiat Chrysler began encouraging office-based employees to work from home and began limiting numbers in company cafeterias.
