Unilever United States said it is donating supplies in the U.S. as a lead-up to a National Day of Service scheduled for May 21.

The company on Wednesday said it is donating $8 million worth of food, soap, personal hygiene and home-cleaning products, which will be distributed through a national network of food banks.

Unilever is also donating over 200,000 masks to New Jersey hospitals to help protect the lives of health care professionals.

The company said its National Day of Service on May 21 will provide about $12 million for Americans in need. On that day, the company said, "Every essential item produced by Unilever employees at its network of 14 U.S. factories that day or products of equal value will be donated and delivered to its community partners to provide to those most in need." The company also said its employees will be encouraged to "dedicate this day to volunteer opportunities that provide hygiene products, food, services and hope to those impacted by the crisis."

Unilever United States said its efforts are part of parent company Unilever NV's global efforts to assist those affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.
