Electronic submissions of eye exam results help
citizens skip the trip to the MVA
The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) has received
Innovation of the Year honors in this year’s StateScoop 50 Awards
for their Online Vision Certification Service. StateScoop 50
recognizes programs and individuals for their achievements and
contributions to the state and local government IT community.
Winners among six categories were chosen by readers and were
recently announced at a reception in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Online Vision Certification Service
(www.egov.maryland.gov/mva/vision) was launched last year to reduce
branch office walk-in traffic and customer wait times. Previously,
MVA customers age 40 and over had to visit their vision provider to
complete a paper eye exam form and either mail-in the form or visit
a branch office to renew their driver’s license. Under this new
program, a driver can take the vision test at a participating
physician’s office and results will be submitted electronically to
the MVA, allowing the driver to easily renew their driver’s license
online and skip the trip to the MVA.
“This program is a vital part of our strategy to allow driver’s
license renewal online,” said MVA Administrator Milt Chaffee. “We
are honored to receive this award.”
A list of over 600 provider locations can be found by searching
“vision” on the state’s official website, Maryland.gov
(www.maryland.gov), or through the MVA's website,
www.mva.maryland.gov, by clicking on Online Vision Certification
Service. Customers can also contact their providers directly for
information about the program. The Online Vision Certification
Service has been overwhelmingly successful in Maryland with over
10,000 eye exam results submitted to the MVA since the launch of
the service. There is no cost to the providers to sign up for the
service; all they need is a computer with internet access.
The Vision Certification Service was developed at no charge for
the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration by NIC Maryland, through
