Medisys selects McKessonHBOC as Distribution Partner
for Futura Safety Syringe
Medisys is pleased to announce the appointment of McKessonHBOC
("McKesson") as its distribution partner for the Futura safety
syringe in the United States. This is a further significant step
in the Group's plans for the US market launch of the Futura
syringe and its objective of ensuring that the product is
available through the largest medical product distribution
network in North America.
McKesson is the largest distributor of pharmaceuticals and
medical supplies in the United States. The company has unmatched
depth, breadth and reach, delivering unique cost reduction and
quality improvement solutions to:
* 25,000 independent and chain pharmacies;
* 5,000 hospitals and integrated delivery networks;
* 35,000 physician practices encompassing more than 250,0000
individual physicians;
* 10,000 extended care sites; and,
* 600 payor organizations.
The company reported revenues of US$36.7 billion for fiscal 2000.
Futura Medical and McKesson envisage the Futura safety syringe
becoming a cornerstone product in a comprehensive Healthcare
Worker Safety Product Program. The Futura/McKesson partnership
will enable healthcare providers to comply with state and federal
legislation requiring the use of safety products, such as the
Futura syringe, which are designed to protect healthcare workers
from injuries associated with traditional sharps devices.
The Futura safety syringe is an innovative safety syringe
featuring an elastomer based retraction function, which
automatically and passively retracts the needle upon full
delivery of medication, thereby reducing the risk of needlestick
injury. The Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act, signed into
law in November 2000, requires all US healthcare providers to
evaluate and use medical devices with engineered sharps injury
protection. The legislation is expected to significantly
increase demand for safety devices. The Futura safety syringe is
due for market launch in the US during the first half of 2001.
David Wong, Medisys Chief Executive Officer, commented: "We are
delighted to have our Futura safety syringe as part of the
Healthcare Worker Safety Product Program and we look forward to
working with McKesson as we launch the product. This partnership
between Futura and McKesson will enable healthcare providers in
the United States to meet the requirements of the legislative
initiatives in the most cost effective way with the best
available technologies and we are convinced that it will help us
to achieve maximum market penetration for the Futura syringe."
Kevin Swann, President, McKessonHBOC Medical Group explained,
"The Healthcare Worker Safety Product Program will offer products
using innovative safety technology covering a wide range of
applications including hypodermic, blood collection, infusion
products, vein access and surgical procedures. Not only will the
program provide for the products, but will include value-added
programs of education, conversion management, public relations
and clinical support as well as compliance."
McKessonHBOC, a Fortune 40 company, is the world's largest supply
management and healthcare information technology company. More
