ROME (MF-Dow Jones)--Governments are playing a key role in the fate of General Motor Corp.'s (GM) German unit Adam Opel GmbH, Italy's finance minister said Tuesday.

Giulio Tremonti told television channel Rai 1 that "it's a game that is being played with the German government, the governors of the German states, the Russian government and the American government. It's a very complex game."

Italian car maker Fiat SpA (F.MI) is one of three bidders.

The other two bidders are Canadian auto supplier Magna International Inc. (MGA), which put forward an offer with Russian state-controlled bank OAO Sberbank, and Ripplewood Holdings LLC.
