Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi Thursday said Fiat SpA (F.MI) doesn't plan to move production abroad as it expands internationally, according to a government official.

"We've had reassurances that Fiat doesn't plan to delocalize," Berlusconi told a meeting of Fiat executives and labor unions at the premier's office, the official said.

The Italian government last month said it would continue to help Fiat only if it keeps its five Italian plants open as it seeks to expand to create one of the world's largest automakers.

Fiat last week took a stake and management control of Chrysler after the U.S. car maker emerged from bankruptcy protection.
