Volkswagen AG said Friday that it has approved a new manufacturing site in Wolfsburg-Warmenau, Germany, close to its main plant.

The new site will be dedicated to the company's Trinity electric cars, the German auto maker said, adding that it expects to invest about 2 billion euros ($2.21 billion).

Construction is expected to start next spring.

The Trinity project represents the next generation of electric vehicles at Volkswagen and incorporates autonomous-driving technology, the company said.
