                               BOARD APPOINTMENT


Greggs is the UK's leading retailer specialising in sandwiches, savouries and
other bakery products, with a particular focus on takeaway food and catering.
It has over 1,200 retail outlets throughout the UK, trading under the Greggs and
Bakers Oven brands.


Bob Bennett FCA, Group Finance Director of Northern Rock plc, has been appointed
to the board of Greggs plc as an additional non-executive director with effect
from 1 December 2003.


Bob Bennett, who is 56, trained as a chartered accountant with Spicer & Pegler
and has held his present position with Northern Rock since 1993.


Derek Netherton, Chairman of Greggs plc, said:  'We are delighted to welcome Bob
to our board, where his extensive financial experience will complement our
