Updated Maine state website features sleek new design

Maine.gov is always focused on meeting the needs of its users. Every year the design of the state website is adapted to align with new demands. The newly refreshed Web portal, launched April 29, addresses today’s needs for immediate, mobile-friendly access to government information and secure online services. In addition, the official state website provides new resources for constituents through open data initiatives, news, and notification services.

“Each year over 11 million visitors access the Maine.gov website searching for resources, information or to use one of our convenient online services,” stated Governor Paul R. LePage. “The number of visitors is only going to increase in the future. So we need to continually improve the user experience wherever we can, across all platforms.”

The new Maine.gov features a flat, simplified layout with parallax scrolling, which allows the site to use high quality images without the loss of speed or efficiency. Maine’s standards-compliant coding also ensures that the site works well across the broadest possible range of Web browsers and is fully accessible.

Using responsive design, the portal automatically adjusts for a desktop, tablet, or smartphone. The mobile site groups content into a unique tiled arrangement, displaying an off-canvas menu, which slides out for easy navigation. Additionally, the portal’s one-stop services, convenient notification options, and excellent customer service make Maine.gov a well-rounded gateway for state resources and information.

“The redesigned Maine.gov portal was created to maximize efficiency within the user experience,” commented Maine’s Chief Technology Officer Greg McNeal. “Large background images have been removed and the design has been flattened and simplified in order to consume less bandwidth, allowing it to load faster on slower networks and mobile platforms, and improving accessibility for the public.”

Moving forward Maine.gov will continue to be a tremendous resource for transacting government business. The site currently processes approximately 4 million transactions annually, offering over 450 unique online services and 300,000 pages of content.

The state’s official website was redesigned at no cost to Maine taxpayers through a collaboration between Maine’s eGovernment partner, Maine Information Network, LLC., a subsidiary of NIC, and the state of Maine.
