Norway Suspends AstraZeneca Vaccinations, Joining Denmark

Norway has followed Danish authorities and suspended use of
AstraZeneca PLC's Covid-19 vaccine after Denmark reported a death
due to a blood clot after receiving the vaccine.
The Norwegian Institute of Public Health said in a statement
Thursday that although it hasn't been concluded that there is a
connection between vaccination and the incident in Denmark, it is
pausing use of the vaccine as a precautionary measure while an
investigation continues.
"We will wait for information if there is a connection between
the vaccine and this case of blood clots," said Geir Bukholm,
director of infection control at the agency.
"I would like to point out that the break does not mean that we
do not recommend vaccination with AstraZeneca in the future," he
added.
The agency said that it had seen some reported cases of blood
clots shortly after vaccination in Norway, but that this has mainly
been in the elderly where there is often another underlying disease
as well.
It is now conducting analyses to examine any connection between
the AstraZeneca vaccine and various blood-clotting conditions, and
it will investigate the possibility of joint Nordic analyses of
rare incidents.
In Norway, 121,820 people have so far been vaccinated with the
AstraZeneca vaccine.
The break will lead to some delay in the vaccination
program.
"Patient safety is the highest priority for AstraZeneca.
Regulators have clear and stringent efficacy and safety standards
for the approval of any new medicine, and that includes Covid-19
Vaccine AstraZeneca," an AstraZeneca spokesman said earlier
Thursday.
The spokesman said the safety of the vaccine has been studied
extensively in Phase 3 trials, and that peer-reviewed data
confirmed that it had been generally well tolerated.
