Industry's first CDC recognized for its high precision and cost effectiveness in space-constrained and power-sensitive applications. Analog Devices, Inc. (NYSE: ADI), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors for signal-processing applications, today announced that the AD7745, the industry's first capacitance-to-digital converter (CDC) received Sensors Magazine's "Best of Sensors Expo" award during its annual conference held last week in Chicago. One of only three "gold" products cited for excellence, the AD7745 received top honors in the category of "sensor components." The CDC is a high-resolution sigma-delta converter that accepts direct capacitance inputs and enables on a single chip a level of precision previously only possible with conventional analog voltage-to-digital converters. This eliminates the discrete components needed for traditional multi-chip solutions and makes possible a cost reduction of as much as 65 percent. "The Best of Sensors Expo Awards recognize products that we feel will have the greatest and broadest impact on the future of sensor-based design," said Barbara Goode, editor-in-chief, Sensors Magazine. "Analog Devices is a well-recognized innovator in this arena. We were wowed by the AD7745 because of the way in which it empowers designers of high-performance instrumentation and sensing applications." "The CDC was developed from a clear need by instrumentation customers for an integrated solution that addressed the lack of precision, high cost, and complicated nature of previous capacitance solutions," said Dick Meaney, vice president, precision converters, Analog Devices. "Analog Devices is honored to receive this accolade from Sensors Magazine and we remain committed to delivering high-performance converters that address specific needs within targeted markets." Sensors Magazine (www.sensorsmag.com), the leading sensor trade publication for more than 21 years, and Sensors Expo & Conference are produced by Questex Media Group. About the AD7745 Introduced in March of 2005, the first three devices in the CDC family - the AD7745, AD7746 and AD7747 - eliminated the constraints previously associated with capacitance sensors, which are used to enable high-precision measurements in space-constrained and power-sensitive applications such as pressure monitoring and position sensing. While extremely robust, accurate, and sensitive, capacitance sensors can be costly and difficult to implement. By enabling higher accuracy (24-bit resolution) and delivering complete on-chip analog functionality, the CDC devices help designers of these reducing design effort and external component costs. The CDC products leverage ADI's expertise in high-precision sigma-delta technology and system integration by combining 24-bit resolution, low noise of 5 aF (10-18) per root hertz, and low power (1 mA max) with a complete range of on-chip analog functions, including a high-performance, 24-bit, sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a precision low-noise, low-drift voltage reference and a temperature sensor.
