VERENIGDE NEDERLANDSE UITGEVERSBEDRIJVEN N.V.
("VNU") INCREASES ITS STAKE IN FREEPAGES TO 10%
The Board of Freepages is pleased to announce that it has
been informed by VNU of their purchase of an additional
5.53% stake in Freepages. VNU now own a 10 per cent
strategic shareholding in Freepages.
In January 1997 VNU and Freepages agreed to launch a
consumer information service in The Netherlands similar to
the one operating in the UK. The Dutch service branded as
SCOOT was successfully launched on a national basis on 1
September and results to date have exceeded management
expectations.
VNU and Freepages have developed a close relationship and
are about to finalise a joint feasibility study to
introduce the SCOOT service in Belgium and Luxembourg.
Joep Brentjens, CEO of VNU said: "By acquiring an interest
in Freepages, VNU strengthens its ties with this innovative
electronic consumer media enterprise. Moreover, Freepages
activities dovetail with VNUs marketing information
services."
Robert Bonnier, CEO of Freepages said: "We welcome VNUs
decision to become a major shareholder and consider it to
be a strong endorsement for our evolving business model
which we are successfully establishing in various European
countries. VNU adds important strategic value and is also
constructively assisting us with the operational execution
process."
