Available immediately through TrendSecure, Trend Micro releases the beta version of a new web reputation service, TrendProtect, and acquires leading freeware anti-spyware tool, HijackThis, popular with expert users CUPERTINO, Calif., March 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Trend Micro Incorporated (TSE:4704TSE:Nasdaq:TSE:TMIC), a leader in network antivirus and content security software and services, today announced its acquisition of HijackThis, a leading freeware tool that accomplished technical users rely on to quickly remove spyware infections from Windows PCs. Trend Micro has released a new beta version of HijackThis and also unveiled a beta version of TrendProtect, a new free service that combines web site reputation monitoring and URL filtering for consumers. These releases further Trend Micro's ongoing commitment to providing customers with free tools and services enabling increased security defenses. Both items are available through TrendSecure (http://www.trendsecure.com/). HijackThis is a virtual standard in the anti-spyware world and has received many accolades including a 5-star CNET editor's review. Over ten million users world-wide have downloaded HijackThis. On CNET's download.com web site, members voted HijackThis as one of the top two anti-spyware programs. HijackThis enables technical users to quickly defeat browser hijackers and other hard-to-remove spyware threats. Rather than using a database of spyware signatures, HijackThis simply lists the places in Windows and your browser where spyware can hide itself. Widely used by web forums that provide help to people with infected computers, HijackThis creates detailed log files that aid community forums, who use this information to solve spyware problems. The new HijackThis 2.0 beta version works with Microsoft(TM) Vista(TM) and Internet Explorer 7. Other developments include an "AnalyzeThis" function that allows users to see how prevalent the threats detected on their PC's are when compared to other HijackThis users. Trend Micro will host HijackThis 2.0 beta on the consumer-oriented TrendSecure portal. A rising tide of malicious web pages are now infecting computers with spyware and other threats while users surf the web, thereby compromising machines, data and identities silently, often without any user interaction. TrendProtect provides users with color-coded information regarding the overall reputation of a website and the trustworthiness of individual web pages within a site, based on extensive reputation resources that are continuously updated. Additional content-checking techniques track whether a web site contains undesirable content, based on specified content-filtering categories. This new service is compatible with Windows Internet Explorer and Firefox, and currently supports Google, MSN and Yahoo search engines. Working as a browser plug-in, it continuously protects consumers against unwanted web content and hidden web threats whenever they are searching or browsing the Internet. These releases enable Trend Micro to collate threat-specific information regarding the mass of different threats targeting web users. This information will be publicly available in the only unadulterated, collective database of web threats that can be sorted by regional severity and global prevalence. "As issues such as browser hijacking increase in frequency and sophistication, Internet users require more information and guidance in order to remain secure. TrendSecure enables Trend Micro to deliver a wealth of services and utilities that will support our customers' needs," said Lane Bess, general manager of Trend Micro's global consumer products and services. "Technology such as HijackThis enables Trend Micro to provide technically savvy users a powerful tool with which to clean infected machines, and TrendProtect provides a color-coded, early warning system for the content and trustworthiness of web pages that consumers visit. Each of these services help consumers stay safe and secure online, especially as social networking, search, and Web 2.0 increase consumers' exposure to potentially unsafe web neighborhoods." Interactive web usage, such as that enabled through popular social networking sites provides the opportunity for the web community to actively interact with others. Such sites provide diverse opportunities to interact with other users, but with such interactive capability also come increased risks. As malware becomes more complex, and finds multiple methods for propagation and infection for financial gain, Trend Micro has continued to introduce new security solutions to protect customers. New solutions such as HijackThis and TrendProtect complement tools such as Trend Micro (TM) HouseCall(TM) and Trend Micro Mobile Security which are already available through TrendSecure. The latest release, Trend Micro Mobile Security 3.0, provides antivirus, a firewall and intrusion detection for smartphones. Availability HijackThis 2.0 beta and the TrendProtect beta are both available at http://www.trendsecure.com/, in English Language from March 19, 2007. HijackThis and TrendProtect are initially compatible only with English Language operating systems. This first release of TrendProtect rates .com, .net, .org and .biz web pages.
