Rick Simpson took first place in the flatbed division, while John Cook drove away with the winner's trophy in the three-axle class. Both Cook and Simpson are former South Carolina Grand Champions. Joining them on the victory stand was Ronnie Luckadoo, who took the No. 1 position in the twin-trailer class. As first place winners, Cook, Luckadoo and Simpson will represent the company at the National Truck Driving Championships to be held this August in Tampa, Fla. Also bringing home trophies for Overnite were Gaffney drivers Dennis Martin, Jim Combs and Steve Newsome, who finished second in the twins, sleeper and five-axle categories, respectively. In addition, Martin captured the Rookie of the Year Award for earning the highest score among all first-time championship competitors. In all, 14 Overnite drivers represented the company at the Columbia event. Together, they outscored the competition to bring home the team trophy. All competitors are rated on their driving skills and are scored on a written test and a personal interview. In addition, all drivers taking part in the state championships must have excellent safety records.
