FREE STATE RING FENCING LIFTED
JOHANNESBURG - August 26, 1999 - Gold Fields Limited today announced that the
South African Revenue Services had given approval for the lifting of "ring
fencing" at the Beatrix and Oryx Mines in the Free State and confirmed that
these two mines, together with the contiguous mineral rights, would be
considered as one mine for income tax purposes.
This decision paves the way for the eventual consolidation of these mines and
the contiguous mineral rights into a major new mining complex.
Oryx Mine is a division of St Helena Gold Mines Limited, and the Beatrix Mine,
a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields. Gold Fields has a 54% interest in
St Helena Gold Mines Limited.
Chris Thompson, chairman of Gold Fields, said: "The South African gold mining
industry is experiencing one of the most difficult times in its history and
the opportunities which have been created through this decision will certainly
have a positive impact for all stakeholders. We applaud the Government for
its industry support in approving our application," he said.
"Gold Fields is now in a position to pursue its vision of actively creating a
'mega mine' in the Free State. Underground exploration has already commenced
towards the Sandriver area from Oryx and into the Goedemoed and Excelsior
areas from Beatrix. The ruling from the South African Revenue Services will
allow an acceleration of these efforts," said Thompson.
Gold Fields has a major presence in the Free State with some 22 million ounces
of resources and some 19 million ounces of reserves at the Beatrix and Oryx
Mines. Existing infrastructure at these mines can now be used to explore, and
possibly exploit, the extensive contiguous mineral rights held by the Group in
the Free State.
Ring Fencing is a feature of the South African mining tax legislation that
regards each mine as a separate entity for income tax purposes. The lifting
of ring fencing in the Free State may result in substantial reduction in
taxation over the next few years, which in turn will release funds for
the acceleration of the exploration and potential development of the Free
State 'mega mine'.
Gold Fields is a major South African gold producer with nearly four million
ounces of annual production, 150 million ounces of mineral resources and
almost 75 million ounces of mineral reserves. The Company trades on the
Johannesburg Stock Exchange under the symbol GFI and in the United States of
America on the Nasdaq Exchange under the symbol GOLD. Gold Fields is also
listed on the London, Paris, Brussels and Swiss Stock Exchanges.
