Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. said Monday its set a first-quarter record for grain movement this year, with more than 6.35 million metric tons carried.

"The 2020 result breaks the company's previous first-quarter record, set in 2016, by 300,000 metric tons" the railroad said.

The company also said it moved 2.09 MMT of grain in January for its best January ever. In March, the company carried 2.5 MMT, representing its best-ever March.

Canadian Pacific said it will add 5,900 new cars to its grain shipping fleet, and the new cars "can carry 10% more volume and 15% more weight compared to the older cars they are replacing."
