Builds on LifeLock Support for Foster Care
Organizations in Local Communities, Such as Aid to Adoption of
Special Kids and First Place for Youth
LifeLock, Inc. (NYSE: LOCK), an industry leader in proactive
identity theft protection, today reinforced its commitment to
helping those who may be more vulnerable to identity theft during
National Foster Care Month through the sponsorship of a series of
videos on foster care youths. The videos were developed by National
PTA. The move furthers LifeLock’s commitment to this at-risk group
and builds on the company’s partnerships with community
organizations Aid to Adoption of Special Kids and First Place for
Youth through financial assistance and education programs.
According the American Bar Association, it is estimated that as
many as fifty percent of foster youth are affected by identity
theft.1
“Identity theft disproportionately affects foster children
because of the large number of people who have access to their
personal information,” said Hilary Schneider, president of
LifeLock. “One of the best ways we can help address this issue is
to increase education about identity theft.”
May is National Foster Care Month, a month set aside to
acknowledge foster parents, family members, volunteers, mentors,
policymakers, child welfare professionals, and other members of the
community who help children and youth in foster care find permanent
homes and connections. During National Foster Care Month, National
PTA, a partner of LifeLock, is providing information about the
nearly 400,000 children and youth in foster care through its Every
Child in Focus campaign, as well as celebrating all of those who
are making a meaningful difference in the lives of foster children.
Today, National PTA revealed that it has created a set of four
videos as part of this program. One of these videos addresses the
risk foster children face related to identity fraud.
LifeLock is also partnering with Aid to Adoption of Special Kids
(AASK), a non-profit that recruits qualified families and mentors
to care for foster children in Arizona, and with First Place for
Youth, a California based non-profit whose mission is to help
foster kids build the skills they need to make a successful
transition to self-sufficiency and responsible adulthood.
“We see young people with credit opened up in their names, where
they're in massive debt for things such as houses, utilities, or
cars. People even get jobs in their names,” said Sam Cobbs, CEO of
First Place for Youth. “Because they come into contact with so many
group homes and social workers, relatives and foster parents, there
is no shortage of opportunities for people to steal their
identities. This is why we’re extremely grateful to partner with
LifeLock to help educate service providers and advocates connected
to the foster care system about some of the simple actions we can
take to stay one step ahead of anyone who is trying to steal a
foster child’s identity.”
As part of the commitment to help fight identity theft, LifeLock
trains law enforcement and victim advocates and collaborates with a
variety of non-profit organizations to help consumers establish
positive habits to combat identity threats. LifeLock partnered with
FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA)
to provide free training to law enforcement throughout the United
States and has reached more than 11,000 law enforcement officials
representing more than 4,000 agencies. LifeLock also partnered with
the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) to provide
training to victim advocates throughout the United States. In 2014,
LifeLock collaborated with National PTA to develop a curriculum
that teaches good digital citizenship and online safety habits for
children.
