New site streamlines citizens' access to
information and services
Alabama residents can now complete voter registrations, business
filings, and public records requests more efficiently than ever,
thanks to the Secretary of State’s recently revamped website.
Secretary of State John H. Merrill oversaw the website relaunch,
which provides quick links allowing users to find important,
citizen-centric services at a glance.
“Alabama residents expect and deserve a simple, efficient online
experience when they interact with our office,” said Secretary
Merrill. “Our goal is to be business and citizen-friendly and to
operate at the pace people are accustomed to. The revamped website
makes it easy for Alabamians to access the services and information
they need most and to quickly complete their business with our
office.”
The new website is optimized for any device Alabama residents
use to access it. A new search feature makes it easy for users to
quickly find what they’re looking for on the site. Citizens can
follow recent Secretary of State news and social media accounts
through links prominently displayed on the homepage. The new design
provides more uniform integration between the main site, online
services, and database searches making the site more organized and
easier to access overall.
The site upgrade also highlights online business services
including the ability to complete domestic business registration
pre-filings and name reservations (if not previously applied for)
in a single transaction. Through the pre-filing service, the
Secretary of State’s office is able to access the company’s stored
pre-file data. This reduces errors and significantly speeds up the
filing process, which previously took about five to seven months
after the Secretary of State received the filing from the county
probate office. The process is now completed within 24 hours of
receipt from the Probate Office, and an expediting fee is no longer
necessary.
“The new website at SOS.Alabama.gov responds to citizens’ and
businesses’ requests for easier access to key online services and
greater efficiencies in online interactions,” said Barrett
Gilbreath, president and general manager of Alabama Interactive,
which developed the new website in conjunction with the Secretary
of State’s office. “The site takes advantage of technologies, such
as page caching for faster load times and breadcrumb navigation, to
better serve the state’s citizens.”
