The Belgian government has asked the European Commission to intervene in talks on the future of General Motors Corp.'s (GM) Opel unit and the rest of its European operations.

The letter, signed by Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy and the head of the Flemish regional government, asks the commission to ensure that any resolution is fair to all European countries where GM has operations.

"We are now faced with the involvement on the European side of only one government in this decision-making process," the letter says, referring to the German government's talks with GM and potential partners.

In a separate letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Belgian government asked her to support the commission's involvement in these talks.
