A strike at Doe Run Peru's Cobriza copper mine is now in its
fourth day, a union official said Friday. The Cobriza mine was
Peru's sixth largest last year, when it produced 18,519 metric tons
of copper.
Other strikes are expected at precious metals mine operator
Compania de Minas Buenaventura (BVN, BUENAVC1.VL) on Saturday,
while workers at Peru's only iron mining company, Shougang Hierro
Peru SAA (SHPC1.VL), are to strike Monday, said Luis Castillo,
general secretary of Peru's National Federation of Mining.
On Wednesday, a strike is expected at copper producer Sociedad
Minera Cerro Verde (CVERDEC1.VL), majority controlled by Freeport
McMoRan Copper and Gold (FCX).
Peru is the world's No. 1 silver producer, is second in copper
and sixth in gold.
