HORSHAM, Penn., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NutriSystem
(NASDAQ:NTRI) is launching its new NutriSystem(R) Silver(TM)
program for men and women over 60. This diet program is formulated
to combat both the sluggish metabolism and nutritional deficiencies
experienced by people in their 60s, 70s and beyond. To help spread
the word about the importance of senior health and fitness,
NutriSystem has partnered with former NFL head coach Don Shula.
Coach Shula, 77 years old, has lost 32 pounds on NutriSystem, while
his wife Mary Anne, 61, has lost 23 pounds. "NutriSystem was a
perfect fit for my wife Mary Anne and I. We are both very active
seniors who needed a weight loss program that could fit into our
busy lifestyles," said Coach Shula. "The foods taste great and are
easy to travel with. We still can't believe that we can eat
Blueberry Muffins and Double Chocolate Chip Almond cookies while
shedding pounds. I'm back to my playing weight and feel 10 years
younger!" More than 60 percent of all adults are overweight and
experts say the problem is even more pronounced among older
Americans. NutriSystem Silver is designed to help older Americans
lose weight. This nutritionally supercharged weight loss program is
packed with protein, fiber, heart healthy fats and is based on a
Low Glycemic index. The Glycemic Index is recognized by the World
Health Organization and it measures the quality of carbohydrates
and their impact on your blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates that
break down slowly, encouraging stable blood sugar levels, rate well
or "low" on the Glycemic Index, versus those that rate higher
because they break down too quickly and cause your insulin levels
to spike and your body to store fat while also leaving you hungry
soon after a meal. It's the difference between "good" carbs and
"bad" carbs. Never Too Late To Lose Weight "It's never too late to
start shedding unwanted weight," says Dr. Jay Satz, NutriSystem's
vice president of program and product development. "Being
overweight and over 60 are two factors that can increase the
incidence of arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and other,
potentially life-threatening conditions. But the new NutriSystem
Silver plan will show seniors the way to shed unwanted pounds -- in
order to live fuller and healthier lives in their golden years."
NutriSystem's Silver Program will build upon the successful and
popular NutriSystem Nourish program with a few modifications. The
prepared foods in the Silver program will be even lower in sodium
(300mg less per day), lower in sugar, fat, saturated fat and
cholesterol. Recognizing that dieting can lead to a decrease in
lean body muscle mass in seniors, NutriSystem Silver increases the
protein intake by 3% daily along with including three daily
servings of dairy products. Beyond that, the program will integrate
more protein and "heart healthy" fats, along with a multi-vitamin
supplements with optimal doses of vitamins and minerals often lost
through the aging process. These include Vitamins B, D, and K,
which are essential in fostering proper metabolic function. To help
seniors feel satisfied and energized, seniors on the NutriSystem
Silver meal plan will eat six meals per day -- breakfast, morning
snack, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner with a dessert. The
Silver program has even eliminated foods with nuts and seeds that
can damage teeth and dentures in older Americans. NutriSystem Teams
up with The National Arthritis Foundation Health concerns, such as
arthritis, the leading cause of a disability among seniors,
dramatically increases in likelihood among those that are
overweight. Given these statistics, NutriSystem realized that the
time was right to introduce a new plan tailored for older adults.
NutriSystem has teamed up with the National Arthritis Foundation to
give a free a "Walk with Ease" audio CD designed to help older
Americans walk their way to good health with every NutriSystem
Silver program. According to the Arthritis Foundation, losing as
little as 15 pounds is associated with nearly a 50 percent
improvement in knee OA symptoms. Convenience and Easy Preparation
Keys to Success Like the original NutriSystem Nourish program, the
Silver program is easy to follow and has large type instructions
and meal planner designed for seniors. Prepared foods are delivered
directly to members' doorsteps -- a feature of NutriSystem's
program that should be especially appealing to seniors who have
difficulty leaving their homes. There are no membership fees, no
meetings to attend, no points to count and no cooking. All of the
Nourish programs provide unparalleled service and support with a
dedicated web site and an online 24/7 support team that is ready
with answers to any diet questions, as well as advice and
