                 Smith & Nephew Completes Sale of ENT Business

Smith & Nephew, the global advanced medical devices group, announces that the
sale of the Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) business to Gyrus Group plc has now been
completed.  The agreement to sell the business was originally announced on 4
May 2001.
