The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil has delayed plans to
adopt resolutions related to sustainable palm oil sourcing and
certification due to low turnout at its recent general assembly, a
spokeswoman for the group said Thursday.
"The final results will be announced in a week when we receive
ballots on individual resolutions by eligible members who could not
attend the general assembly," the spokeswoman said by phone from
the northern Malaysian state of Sabah.
The resolutions included plans by buyers and producers to commit
to timetables for sustainable production and sourcing of palm oil
and refined products as well as a proposal by Indonesian growers to
allow producers to carry forward unsold stocks of certified
sustainable palm products starting next year.
The RSPO, which includes palm oil producers, environmental
groups and big palm oil buyers such as McDonald's Corp. (MCD) and
Unilever NV (UN), seeks to mandate sustainable practices in the
palm oil industry, which has frequently been the subject of
allegations of environmental wrongdoing.
