Chief Executive Jean Azema earlier Tuesday said Groupama could open up its capital to outside investors, but will remain independent.

French daily Le Monde, citing unnamed sources, Monday reported that French bank Credit Agricole SA (ACA.FR) is considering merging with French rival Societe Generale SA (GLE.FR) in a plan that would first combine its insurance business with Groupama, before the two companies would bid for SocGen, in which Groupama already owns a 4% stake.
Groupama declined to comment.
