The board of International Coal Ventures Ltd. will meet Thursday to discuss the joint venture's strategy for Perth-based Riversdale Mining Ltd. (RIV.AU), Coal India's chairman said.

"ICVL board will meet today at 1230 GMT. Riversdale is one of the agenda items," Pratha Bhattacharyya told reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference.

ICVL, a joint venture between five state-run Indian companies--Steel Authority of India Ltd. (500113.BY), NTPC Ltd. (532555.BY), NMDC Ltd. (526371.BY), Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. and Coal India (533278.BY)--has been asked by India's steel ministry to consider bidding for Riversdale, NTPC Chairman Arup Roy Choudhury said on Dec. 14.

It would be a counter-bid to Rio Tinto Ltd.'s (RIO.AU) A$3.9 billion takeover offer for Riversdale. Rio Tinto's bid for the Mozambique-focused miner was endorsed by Riversdale's board earlier Thursday.
