Pac-West Telecomm Enhances VoiceSource Offering to Support IP Connectivity Enables VoIP and other IP providers to use Pac-West as a bridge to connect to the PSTN STOCKTON, Calif., June 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pac-West Telecomm, Inc. (NASDAQ:PACW), a provider of traditional and next-generation voice communications services in the Western U.S., today announced that it has enhanced its VoiceSource offering to support IP (Internet Protocol) connectivity for origination and termination of voice traffic. The enhancement enables next-generation service providers to use Pac-West's SuperPOP network as a bridge to interconnect IP networks with the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Hank Carabelli, Pac-West's President and CEO, said, "VoiceSource leverages our unique network infrastructure to bridge IP networks with the PSTN fueling the growth in VoIP and other IP-based voice services. Offering service providers the ability to connect to our network via IP enables our customers to rapidly and cost-effectively deploy next-generation services throughout our Western U.S. footprint, including virtually 100% of California." Using an IP handoff, next-generation service providers can quickly and seamlessly interconnect their IP networks to the PSTN through Pac-West's SuperPOP network without having to invest in additional equipment to convert their IP traffic to traditional TDM protocols. This significantly reduces the service provider's costs and accelerates time to market. Infonetics Research analyst Kevin Mitchell agrees with the cost and infrastructure benefits, stating, "In the recent past, handoffs between carriers had to be TDM, even if both carriers transported VoIP. Now gateways can be eliminated, reducing stranded capex and opex associated with back-to- back gateways." Mitchell goes on to report that carrier respondents are planning more native VoIP interconnects. "In our study on carrier VoIP adoption 'Service Provider Plans for Next Gen Voice 2004,' when we asked carrier respondents what percentage of their outgoing (terminating) voice traffic to other carriers is native VoIP, both at the time of the interview and 12 months into the future, respondents reported that terminating traffic was an average of 2% native VoIP in 2004, jumping to an average of 13% in 2005." To transport IP-based voice traffic, Pac-West recently augmented its network to support multiple signaling protocols, including SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). Michael Hawn, Pac-West's Vice President for Customer Network Services, noted, "With SIP becoming the dominant signaling protocol for IP voice transport, we have recently implemented it across our network to meet customer demand."
