Marconi has achieved certification for its AXR platform to be deployed in both the U.S. and Canada LAS VEGAS, Oct. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- (TELECOM '05) -- Marconi Corporation plc (LONDON: MONI and Nasdaq: MRCIY) today announced the general availability of its next-generation fixed wireless AXR Access Radio platform for deployment in the U.S. and Canada. Marconi's AXR platform will now enable operators in North America to use the advantages of a packet/cell-based radio system in cellular backhaul networks, supporting a host of technologies as well as broadband applications for business customers. AXR is the first member of a newly developed microwave product family that delivers "distributed intelligence," meaning any radio can be used as a broadband multiservice access node with embedded switching and traffic shaping. This capability makes complex multivendor networks using separate transport-oriented radios and additional devices for traffic engineering obsolete. Further, AXR is topology agnostic in that it supports point-to-point, ring, mesh and point-to-multipoint topologies. It also offers a wide range of traffic interfaces and supports backhauling of a variety of services such as mobile backhaul, as well as Wi-Fi, WiMAX and other last mile solutions. "Such innovative solutions lead to significant capex and opex savings on a network level by considerably reducing the product variety in complex access networks," said Hans-Peter Petry, director strategy and product line management for Marconi's wireless products. The adaptation for the North American market now adds new frequency bands and standard interfaces such as T1 and OC-3c. AXR has been recently introduced into European markets supporting various frequency bands ranging from 7 GHz to 38 GHz, along with a variety of interfaces. Using dynamic modulation, the AXR adapts itself to changing environmental conditions and traffic patterns, allowing maximum transmission capacity in any situation. This is a key differentiator as operators have much more flexibility in optimizing link ranges versus capacity than with conventional radios. Furthermore, AXR supports the Asynchronous Transfer Mode Private Network-to-Network Interface (PNNI), facilitating end-to-end connection setup, dynamic routing and resilience in networks with suitable topologies. "Certification in North America allows us to address one of the most interesting world markets, leveraging the experience and capabilities we developed in Central and Eastern Europe where we are recognized as being one of the key wireless players," said Joe Ferrara, CEO of Marconi's North America division. This achievement follows Marconi's recent announcement that it had been selected to support the largest public trial of WiMAX to date, positioning the company and its technology at the forefront of the radio access industry.
