Mercedes-Benz is considering selling its dealership business in Germany as part of a potential restructuring.

The German luxury-car maker could sell up to 80 company-owned outlets, with a total of roughly 8,000 employees under its Mercedes-Benz Own Retail umbrella, as part of an optimization strategy, a spokesman said Friday. German newspaper Handelsblatt first reported the potential sales.

Mercedes said that if the businesses go on the market, they'd be sold to experienced dealership owners. Closing the group-owned retail sites isn't an option, the company said.

"Physical retail locations are and will remain a central pillar of Mercedes-Benz's success," the company said.
