General Motors Corp. (GMGMQ) said Friday it will recall 900 laid-off workers to a Lansing, Mich.-area factory.

The company said it will restart a second shift at the Delta Township assembly plant on Aug. 24.

The auto maker is in the midst of a lengthy summer shutdown of many of its factories in an effort to reduce inventories, in part to prepare for the closure of thousands of dealerships as part of the company's restructuring.

Demand for the Lansing-built crossover vehicles - including the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave - have held up amid the decline, GM said.

The company said it canceled plans to idle the Spring Hill, Tenn., plant for an additional week in August because of increased demand for the Chevrolet Traverse crossover, built on the same platform as the Acadia and Enclave.
