BRUSSELS (AFP)--The government of Belgium's northern Flanders region has made a new offer to U.S. carmaker General Motors Corp. (GM) to save the company's Opel plant in Antwerp, Belgian news agency Belga reported Monday.

The Flemish regional government proposed in a letter to GM Europe to buy the property and buildings where the plant is and rent them back to the group, generating EUR200 million that would keep it running.

A spokesman for the Flemish government said that Belga's report was a "correct summary" of the letter, but had no further details.

Flanders fears that GM may sacrifice its Opel factory in Antwerp, which employs 2,600 people, as part of restructuring.

The Flemish government has already offered guarantees of up to EUR300 million to help save the plant.
