BRUSSELS (AFP)--The European Commission has invited General Motors Corp. (GM) bosses to meet European Union ministers concerned by the difficulties facing the U.S. automaker's German affiliate Adam Opel AG, a spokesman said Tuesday.

"We've invited for next Friday the highest representatives from General Motors Europe and Detroit; we understand the CEO from Detroit will be coming and the ministers of economy of all the member states," the commission spokesman said.

"We expect at least the member states with an interest either in production or supply of General Motors to be here on Friday for an informal meeting to coordinate measures, to enhance the exchange of information and to enhance transparency," he added.

The stricken General Motors has ceded patents obtained by its German unit Opel to the U.S. Treasury in exchange for public aid, according to German press reports.

German officials are looking for the best way to help Opel, which employs 26,000 workers in Germany and some 50,000 across Europe.
