LONDON--J. Sainsbury PLC (SBRY.LN) market share remained static

Kantar Worldpanel, and was again the only one of the U.K.'s big
four supermarket chains to boost sales in the period.
In the 12 weeks ended Oct. 11, the number three grocer by market
share boosted sales 1.1% to 4.08 billion pounds ($6.3 billion),

purchasing habits of 25,000 demographically representative
households in the U.K. Its market share stood at 16.1%
Number one retailer Tesco PLC's (TSCO.LN) market share fell to
28.1% in the 12 weeks, compared with 28.8% in the comparable period

GBP6.89 billion.
Asda, a subsidiary of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT), saw its market

sales 3% lower at GBP4.08 billion.
Once again German discounters Aldi and Lidl continued to grow
market share and sales. Aldi and Lidl's combined market share rose
to 9.9% in the 12 weeks ended Oct. 11, compared with 8.5% in the
year earlier period. Aldi sales have risen 17.6% to GBP1.38
billion, while Lidl's sales are up 18% at GBP1.06 billion.
Waitrose' market share, which has been steadily climbing, was
unchanged at 5.2%, but sales are up 2.1% at GBP1.28 billion.
Separately, the company announced that managing director and deputy
chairman, Mark Price, will leave the partnership after 33 years
with the group. He will leave next April and be replaced by Rob
Collins, Waitrose' retail director.
Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC's (MRW.LN) market share slipped to
10.8%, from 10.9%, while sales are 1% lower at GBP2.64 billion.
