The U.K. arm of German discount supermarket chain Aldi plans to
spend GPB600 million in the U.K. over the next two years, creating
35,000 new jobs.
Aldi, which currently employs 27,000 people in the U.K., said it
will develop its head office and open new stores and distribution
centers across the country.
The supermarket chain, which in April overtook Waitrose to
become Britain's sixth largest grocer, said six British athletes
will becomes the faces of a new campaign "which helps encourage the
nation to tuck into fresh, affordable, Great British food."
The athletes include the world's first female boxing Olympic
champion, Nicola Adams, and cyclist Liam Phillips.
The move to brand itself as being more British comes as Aldi has
been battling for market share with the nation's largest grocers,
including Tesco PLC.
